Hair & Scalp

A medical approach to hair and scalp health.

Hair loss has many causes, and treatment only works when the cause is identified. Assessment begins with trichoscopy and, where indicated, laboratory investigation.

Overview

Investigate before you treat.

Pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, autoimmune alopecia and inflammatory scalp disease can look similar to patients but require very different management.

Our dermatologists distinguish between them using scalp examination, trichoscopy and targeted investigations, then plan treatment that is realistic about timescale.

How Care Works

The diagnostic pathway.

A structured sequence keeps assessment thorough and avoids treating the wrong diagnosis.

  1. 01

    History and pattern review

Onset, rate of loss, family history, medication, nutrition, styling practices and previous treatment.

  2. 02

    Scalp examination and trichoscopy

Magnified examination of follicular openings, hair shaft calibre, scaling and inflammation.

  3. 03

    Laboratory investigation

Blood tests where indicated; scalp biopsy is occasionally required to confirm a scarring alopecia.

  4. 04

    Treatment and monitoring

Medical therapy with standardised photography at review so change can be measured objectively.
